Two Men Shot Dead in Thekwane South, Mpumalanga—Mystery Surrounds Vehicle’s Criminal Links
By Rihlelo
Thekwane South, Mpumalanga – Police have launched a full investigation following the brazen daylight killing of two men who were shot dead while sitting inside a vehicle in Thekwane South earlier today.
The shooting occurred shortly after midday, sending shockwaves through the small Mpumalanga community. According to the South African Police Service (SAPS), officers were dispatched to the scene after reports of gunshots were received from residents in the area.
Upon arrival, police found a grey Toyota Yaris parked with its engine still running. Inside the vehicle were the lifeless bodies of two men, believed to be aged 51 and 45. Both victims were declared dead on the scene by emergency responders. Preliminary investigations revealed that both men hailed from KaBhokweni.
“At this stage, the victims' identities are being withheld pending formal identification and notification of their next of kin,” said a SAPS spokesperson on the scene.
Vehicle Possibly Tied to Local Crime Wave
While the motive for the killings remains unclear, speculation is already swirling in the community about the possible criminal background of the victims or the vehicle they were driving. Several residents claim that the Toyota Yaris in question resembles one reportedly linked to multiple crimes in the area.
According to community members, the car matches the description of a vehicle allegedly used to pick up unsuspecting hitchhikers along the R40 route and nearby roads. Victims would later report being robbed of their belongings and abandoned in remote parts of Thekwane South.
“We’ve heard of this car before,” said one resident who asked to remain anonymous. “People have been warning each other on WhatsApp groups not to accept lifts from a grey Yaris. It’s been connected to a few dodgy incidents.”
While police have not confirmed any connection between the vehicle and prior criminal activity, they are not ruling out the possibility. Investigators are now working to determine whether the murders are linked to retaliation, gang involvement, or internal disputes between known criminal elements.
Community Demands Answers
The double murder has reignited concerns about safety in the area, with residents calling on authorities to step up crime-fighting efforts and patrols. “We live in fear,” said another local. “These killings are becoming too common, and now we’re hearing the same cars involved in crimes are coming back. We need better protection.”
The SAPS has urged the public not to jump to conclusions and to allow the investigation to unfold. However, they have appealed to anyone with information about the incident—or the suspected criminal use of the vehicle—to come forward.
“We are following all leads, and no stone will be left unturned,” the police spokesperson stated. “If the community has relevant information, we encourage them to report it anonymously. Every tip counts.”
Crime Scene Still Active
As of late afternoon, the crime scene remained cordoned off as forensic teams continued combing the area for evidence. Ballistic experts are also analyzing shell casings found at the scene to determine the type of weapon used in the shooting.
No suspects have been arrested yet, and the motive remains under investigation. Police are expected to review CCTV footage from nearby properties and intersections, and interviews with potential witnesses are ongoing.
Ongoing Investigation
While speculation continues, police maintain that their primary focus is uncovering the truth behind the killings and ensuring justice for the victims and their families.
“We will work tirelessly until we get to the bottom of this case,” police assured.
Anyone with information that could assist in the investigation is urged to contact the SAPS Crime Stop line at 08600 10111 or use the MySAPSApp.
